Thermography

Thermography is a non-invasive tool which has the ability to provide instant results as well as ensuring the equine is comfortable and the technician and handler remain safe. Using an infrared camera, the technician has the ability to capture real time heat maps in the form of a thermogram.Thermograms are pictorial representations of the surface temperature of the horse in question.

Measuring the surface temperature of the horses skin gives us an indication of any changes in the vascular, muscular, skeletal and nervous systems as we are able to view any inflammation going on underneath the skin which is undetectable to the human hand or eye. Research has shown that a temperature difference of as little as 0.5 Degrees Celsius is enough to need further investigation.

Thermography has also been proven to detect damage in structures up to three weeks before the horse shows any clinical signs of lameness. This is because before a structure, such as a tendon or ligament, stops functioning fully it will have suffered accumulative damage. This in turn will have weakened the structure without the horse being actively lame.

Thermography is perfect for:

  • Injuries
  • Rehabilitation
  • The prevention of injury
  • Pre-purchase examinations
